From Nov 17 - March 24 the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf (http://www.nrw-forum.de/index.php) presents an exhibition about fashion-photography named "Mode: Bilder". 400 fotos taken between 1843 - 2006 will be shown. The statement behind the exhibition says that every picture taken of a person is in its core a form of fashion-photography. Pieces of the following artists and photographers will be shown in the NRW-Forum (amongst others): Hill and Adamson, Irving Penn, Guy Bourdin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Martin Kippenberger etc.

Vom 17.11. - 24.03. zeigt das NRW-Forum Düsseldorf (http://www.nrw-forum.de/index.php) die Ausstellung "Mode: Bilder", die sich (wie der Name schon erahnen lässt) mit Modefotografie befasst. Es werden 400 Fotos zu sehen sein, die zwischen 1843 - 2006 entstanden sind. Diese Ausstellung möchte zeigen, dass jedes Foto einer Person ein Modefoto ist. Werke der folgenden Künstler und Fotografen werden ausgestellt: Hill und Adamson, Irving Penn, Guy Bourdin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Martin Kippenberger u.a.

NEW SHOES

I went to Andalusia a few weeks ago and bought some nice stuff like those yellow booties and the bluish-grey patent pumps. More pics of my other buys and the gorgeous moorish architecture in Andalusia will follow soon.

Vor wenigen Wochen war ich in Andalusien und habe dort natürlich auch ein paar nette Sachen gekauft; u.a. diese gelben Stiefelchen und die blau-grauen Lackpumps. Ich werde bald weitere Fotos von meiner Shopping-Ausbeute und der wunderschönen maurischen Architektur posten.

From Oct 29 2007 till Feb 11 2008, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (http://www.moca.org/) presents 90 pieces from the Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. Moreover, a limited edition of Louis Vuitton handbags, coin purses, agendas etc. designed by Murakami is available at the moca.

Collaborations between Vuitton and Murakami have already been successful in the past.

Murakami is famous for his artistic style called 'superflat' which consists of a mixture between historic Japanese paintings and popular contemporary Japanese cartoons. His work demonstrates the character of mass-production in the entertainment sector and its influence on today's aesthetics. Thus, the fading boundaries between high and popular culture are mirrored in his work.

Vom 29. Oktober 2007 bis zum 11. Februar 2008 zeigt das Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst in Los Angeles (http://www.moca.org/) 90 Werke von dem japanischen Künstler Takashi Murakami. Zudem ist eine limitierte Kollektion von Handtaschen, Geldbörsen, Terminkalendern etc. aus dem Hause Vuitton in Zusammenarbeit mit Murakami im Moca erhältlich.

Vuitton und Murakami haben bereits früher erfolgreich zusammengearbeitet.

Murakami gilt als Mitbegrüner der Kunstrichtung 'Superflat', die aus einer Mischung von traditionellen japanischen Kunststilen und zeitgenössischen japanischen Cartoons besteht. Seine Arbeit betont den Warencharakter des Entertainment-Sektors und dessen Auswirkungen auf aktuelle ästhetische Strömungen. Demnach ist Murakamis Arbeit ein Ausdruck der zunehmenden Verschmischung von Hoch- und Popkultur.

SUBVERSIVE JEWELRY

I came across some interesting jewelry from a brand called "subversive jewelry" (check out their website which has a nice design imo: http://www.subversivejewelry.com/).

Some of those necklaces are so eye-catching and huge but in combination with a simple black outfit they might work well. I like the mix of materials and the overloaded look of their pieces. Unfortunately, the necklaces start at around 500 $ and the earrings at 300 $ and they don’t ship to Germany.

Zufällig stieß ich auf die website des Label s Subversive Jewelry, welches interessanten Schmuck herstellt (schaut euch die website an, allein schon wegen ihrem netten Design: http://www.subversivejewelry.com/).

Die meisten ihrer Ketten sind sehr auffällig und groß, aber in Kombination mit einem schlichten schwarzen Outfit könnten sie sehr gut wirken. Mir gefallen besonders der Materialmix und dieses ‚überladene‘ der Schmuckstücke. Leider sind die Sachen nicht sehr günstig (Ketten starten bei ca. 500 und Ohrringe bei 300 $) und Sie versenden nicht nach Deutschland.

The girl's headpiece looks so nice and due to my love for colourful tights I adore the turquoise tights in combination with the yellow pumps! The black trench adds a classical note to the outfit. Well done!

ART EVENTS IN COLOGNE

The coming week will be packed with art events in Cologne.
Cologne Fine Art starts on the 31st of Oct and is an traditional art exposition, displaying pieces from antiquity till now.
Art.Fair 21 celebrates its 5th anniversary this year and exhibits art of the 21st century.
The programme of the "Lange Nacht der Kölner Museen" (museumsnight) looks very appealing and you can download it here: http://www.museumsnacht-koeln.de/start.htm.
Hopefully, I'll visit one of those events!


Die kommende Woche steht in Köln ganz im Zeichen der Kunst.
Die Cologne Fine Art beginnt am 31.10.07 und gilt als traditionelle Kunstmesse, in der Werke von der Antike bis heute ausgestellt werden.
Die Art.Fair 21 feiert dieses Jahr ihr 5-jähriges Jubiläum und zeigt Kunst aus dem 21. Jahrhundert.

WHEN SUBCULTURAL STYLE BECOMES MAINSTREAM

The influence of subcultural style on mainstream trends is an issue which isn't new but which arose again in the context of the movie "This is England" (for more information click:http://www.thisisenglandmovie.co.uk/). I wrote about this topic in my MA-thesis and came across some posts on www.thefashionspot.com concerning skinhead and gothic-style.

Subcultural elements of style are interesting and offer new possibilities and inspiration for the mainstream market. But isn't it sad that the style of those groups who turn against mass culture gets exploited and sold by the mass market and high fashion industries? Or is the commercialization of those styles just a form of expressing acceptance? What do you think?


Der Einfluss von subkulturellen Stilelementen auf Mainstream-Trends ist kein neues Thema, aber im Hinblick auf den Film "This is England" (mehr Infos unter: http://www.thisisenglandmovie.co.uk/) erhielt diese Diskussion neuen Auftrieb. Ich behandelte dieses Thema teilweise in meiner Magisterarbeit und stolperte bei www.thefashionspot.com über zwei Threads, die Skinhead- und Gothicmode zum Thema hatten.

Subkulturelle Stile sind natürlich interessant und bieten neue Möglichkeiten und Inspirationen für den Mainstream-Markt. Aber ist es nicht andererseits schade, dass der Stil von Gruppen, welche sich von der Massenkultur abwenden und -heben wollen, von der Modeindustrie ausgebeutet und vermarktet wird? Oder ist die Vermarktung dieser Stile ein Ausdruck von Akzeptanz? Was meint ihr?

CHUCK CLOSE

On my daily research on the internet I came across an article about the Whitney gala in honoring Chuck Close where a guest was wearing one of his paintings printed on cloth (read this article here: http://www.style.com/peopleparties/parties/scoop/102407WHIT?page=2). Accidentally, Chuck Close is one of my most favorite artists. Although he is not well known in Germany, the Ludwig Forum Aachen (http://www.ludwigforum.de/) displayed 25 of his paintings in an exhibition called "Erwiderte Blicke - Porträts 1969-2006" a few weeks ago.

Chuck Close was born in 1940 in Monroe, Washington and he is one of the most important representatives of American photorealism. In 1988, a blood clot left him paralyzed and he became quadriplegic. Nevertheless, he didn't gave up his work but continued by painting with a brush held between his teeth. Fortunately, he is able to move his arms and legs today so that it is possible for Close to paint with a brush strapped to his hand.

I went to the exhibition in the Ludwig Forum and was very impressed. Most of the paintings displayed were huge (more than 2,00m x 2,00m). Close uses different techniques in his work. Nearly all paintings are painted with photos of his friends or family as models (using acryl). One can hardly believe that those works are paintings because they look so real. Others consists of dots and are painted in a mosaic-style if one examines them from a closer distance. Some are collages made out of paper and Close created astounding effects when painting with his fingerprints.

Heute stieß ich bei meiner täglichen Internetrecherche auf einen Artikel über die Whitney Gala zu Ehren von Chuck Close, auf der ein Gast ein Werk von Close, aufgedruckt auf Stoff, als Kleid trug (der link zum Artikel: http://www.style.com/peopleparties/parties/scoop/102407WHIT?page=2). Zufällig ist Chuck Close einer meiner Lieblingskünstler und obwohl er in Deutschland nicht sehr bekannt ist, zeigte das Ludwig Forum Aachen (http://www.ludwigforum.de/) vor wenigen Wochen 25 seiner Werke in einer Ausstellung mit dem Titel "Erwiderte Blicke - Porträts 1969-2006".

Chuck Close wurde 1940 in Monroe, Washington geboren und gilt als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des amerikanischen Photorealismus. 1988 platzte ein Blutgefäß in seiner Wirbelsäule und hatte eine Querschnittslähmung zur Folge. Trotzdem gab er seine Arbeit nicht auf, sondern zeichnete weiter, indem er den Pinsel fortan mit dem Mund führte. Glücklicherweise hat Close in seinen Armen und Beinen ein gewisses Maß an Beweglichkeit wiedererlangt, so dass er nun den Pinsel an seiner Hand festschnallen kann und auf diese Weise seine Arbeit fortsetzt.

Ich besuchte die Ausstellung im Ludwig Forum und war sehr beeindruckt. Die meisten der ausgestellten Stücke hatten gewaltige Ausmaße (mehr als 2,00m x 2,00m). Close verwendet verschiedene Techniken in seinen Werken. Als Vorlage für die meisten Bilder greift Close auf Fotografien von Freunden oder Familienmitgliedern zurück und zeichnet diese dann (meistens mit Acryl) auf seine riesigen Leinwände. Man kann sich nur schwer vorstellen, dass diese Bilder wirklich gemalt sind, da sie dermaßen 'echt' wirken. Andere Bilder sind wiederum in einem mosaik-ähnlichen Stil gemalt. Diese 'Pixel' werden besonders deutlich, wenn man näher an das jeweilige Werk herantritt. Andere Bilder bestehen aus Papiercollagen während Close bspw. bei seinem Werk "Fanny" erstaunliche Effekte erzielt, indem er mit seinen Fingerabdrücken 'zeichnet'.

ANOTHER FASHION BLOG

In general, crossover aesthetics is (obviously) about all things aesthetic. The main focus lies on issues such as fashion, art and pop culture. For this blog, the spheres in which the different aesthetic fields intermingle and touch each other are particularly relevant.

When reading fashion blogs, I'm always interested in the person behind the blog. So here are some facts about me:

I'm 24 years old, living in Germany, graduated a few weeks ago from university (studied sociology, political science and english literature), working at university and in the PR sector as an intern.//


Crossover aesthetics befasst sich allgemein (naheliegenderweise) mit ästhetischen Dingen. Dabei liegt das Hauptaugenmerk auf Themen wie Mode, Kunst und Populärkultur. Die Punkte, in denen sich die verschiedenen ästhetischen Bereiche berühren und kreuzen, sind in diesem Blog von besonderem Interesse.

Das Lesen von Modeblogs macht mich stehts neugierig auf die Person, die hinter diesem Blog steht.
