Besides the beautiful dresses and jewellery, some Dior ads painted by René Gruau impressed me much and still pop up in my mind now and then.
Unfortunately, Gruau died 3 years ago in 2004 at the age of 95. He was born in Italy and became a famous illustrator for fashion magazins like Vogue. Gruau also produced many drawings for well-known fashion houses such as Balmain, Givenchy, Balenciaga and, of course, Dior and he created ads for ballet companies. His drawings bear resemblance to Toulouse-Lautrec's work.
Vor zwei Monaten besuchte ich die Dior-Ausstellung im Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln (http://www.museenkoeln.de/museum-fuer-angewandte-kunst/default.asp?s=190&tid=94&kontrast=&schrift=). Neben prächtigen Kleidern und aufwendig gefertigtem Schmuck blieben mir besonders die von René Gruau gezeichneten Werbeplakate im Gedächtnis. Leider starb Gruau vor drei Jahren im Alter von 95 Jahren. Er wurde in Italien geboren und machte (hauptsächlich) in Paris und New York Karriere als Modezeichner. Er entwarf Illustrationen für Modezeitschriften (z.B. für Vogue) und für bekannte Modehäuser wie Balmain, Givenchy, Balenciaga und natürlich Dior. Zudem zeichnete er Werbeplakate für Ballettkompanien. Seine Illustrationen erinnern an die Werke von Toulouse-Lautrec.

I consider this kind of illustration very interesting. It's a pity that nowadays nobody publishes covers with that, it would be nice, for once
I totally agree with you! I would love to see ads nowadays which are illustrated in the way Gruau did it!
