I went to the "Big Blue Ball" exhibition at the Ludwig Forum Aachen a few weeks ago. This exhibition highlights the connection between art and fashion and shows some very imaginative creations from fashion students across Europe.

I got interested in the work of Motohiko Odani by seeing his dress made of wolf's fur (see first pic above). It's abhorrent yet fascinating at the same time.
He is famous for his installations and photography. Although alteration and mutation are characteristic for his work Odani's photos radiate a serene beauty which is hard to grasp.

FASHION ACTION PAINTING

The Belgian artist and illustrator Jarno Kettunen tries to express the mood at the backstage of fashion shows through action drawings.
I think the implied sketchiness with its runs of colour add a careless attribute to his paintings which make them very interesting to look at. They seem to be vibrant yet apparitional and abstract, lacking details but their composition doesn't look random to me.

Der belgische Künstler und Illustrator Jarno Kettunen fängt die Atmosphäre im Backstage-Bereich von Fashion Shows ein, indem er sie kreativ in seinen action paintings umsetzt.
Auf mich wirken die Zeichnungen durch ihre angedeutete Skizzenhaftigkeit und die unkontrolliert und nachlässig scheinenden Farbverläufe sehr interessant und dynamisch. Der Mix aus Chaos, dessen Anordnung nicht völlig willkürlich wirkt ist irgendwie faszinierend.
Oder was meint ihr?

Kareem Iliya was born in Lebanon in 1967 and studied fashion design in Texas and New York. He works with watercolours and ink to create those beautiful illustrations. His playing with contrasts and the colour gradient in his work are stunning!
Btw, I really need a book about "Fashion illustration". Do you have any recommendations?


Kareem Iliya wurde 1967 im Libanon geboren und studierte später Modedesign in Texas und New York. Er benutzt Wasserfarben und Tinte für seine Werke. Mir gefallen besonders die Kontraste und Farbverläufe der Bilder. Da fällt mir ein: Ich brauche umbedingt ein Buch über "Fashion Illustration". Könnt ihr mir was empfehlen?

PICTURING YOUTH

Yesterday, I came across an article about two photographers. Their pics are concerned with the same subject: youth. But the ways in which both try to express this topic are highly contradictory. The kids in Larry Clark's (65 years old) photos (who did films like "Kids" and "Ken Park") are mostly drug addicts, living in bad social circumstances (e.g. ghettos). Seperation and provocation are commanding here. The younger Ryan McGinley (30 years old) shows us naked teenagers in paradisiac surroundings full of joy. Which approach is more appealing to you? Why? Maybe the difference in age between those photographers is one reason for their diffenerent ways of dealing with the same subject?


Vor kurzem stieß ich auf einen Artikel über 2 Fotografen, deren Bilder sich dem selben THema widmen: Jugend. Interessant ist, wie unterschieldich das Thema von beiden behandelt und dargestellt wird. Larry Clark (65, hat auch Filme wie "Kids" und "Ken Park" gemacht) zeigt uns vorwiegend Jugendliche, die sich gerade einen Schuß setzen, im Dreck leben. Die Bilder drücken Einsamkeit und Provokation aus. Auf den Fotos von Ryan McGinley (30) sehen wir hingegen nackte übermütige Teenager, die durch paradiesisch anmutende Szenen hüpfen. Welcher Ansatz spricht euch stärker an und warum? Einer der Gründe, warum die Ansätze beider Fotografen so stark voneinander abweichen liegt sicherlich in deren Altersunterschied.

DMITRY SHUBIN

Dmitry Shubin is an artist from St. Petersburg and I saw some pics of his Moscow-Lissbon project in the Ludwig Forum (http://www.ludwigforum.de/) last week. He found the models for his photos via email/internet and travelled from Moscow to Lissbon for taking their pictures. Those pics bear a striking resemblance to streetstyle-photos.

Dmitry Shubin ist Künstler und stammt aus St. Petersburg. Letzte Woche sah ich Fotos seines Moskau-Lissabon Projekts im Ludwig Forum (http://www.ludwigforum.de/) und mir gefielen nicht nur die Bilder, sondern auch die Geschichte dahinter: Dmitry suchte oder fand seine Models per Email (oder anderweitig über Internetaufrufe) und reiste von Moskau bis Lissabon um diese Menschen zu portraitieren. Mich erinnern diese Bilder stark an Streetstyle-Fotos.

LONGO'S WOMEN

Although I wasn't allowed to take pics in the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, I made some notes while strolling through the museum (as usual).
One of the artists who caught my eye was Robert Longo. I love the style of the women shown in his drawings! Clean, simple, elegant without being boring (ok, the womens' poses are important, too).


Obwohl ich, wie bereits erwähnt, keine Fotos im Ludwig Museum in Budapest machen durfte, wurden, wie üblich, eifrig Notizen während des Museumsrundgangs gemacht.
Einer der Namen, die ich in mein Moleskine gekritzelt habe ist Robert Longo. Dieser amerikanische Künstler zeigt Frauen mit einem wunderbaren Stil: Clean, simpel und elegant ohne langweilig zu wirken (ok, die Posen der Frauen spielen dabei natürlich auch eine Rolle).

On Easter Sunday, my friend and I walked to Budapest's Ludwig Museum and I was quite dissappointed because I wasn't allowed to take pics.
But alongside the Museum is the National Theatre situated which has a very special and beautiful architecture. Between the Museum and the Theatre exists a small buliding which is the Gallery of the National Theatre. We walked inside and saw so many extravagant dresses and, best of all, I was allowed to take pics:)
Accidentally, we came across a photography-exhibition which was displayed on the street close to the American embassy.

Ein Besuch des Ludwig Museums in Budapest stand für Ostersonntag auf unserem Programm. Zuerst war ich etwas enttäuscht, da es verboten war, Fotos innerhalb des Museums zu machen.
Angrenzend an das Museum befindet sich das Nationaltheater was durch seine außergewöhnliche aber dennoch sehr ansprechende Architektur auffällt. Die Gallerie des Nationaltheaters hat uns von außen wie von innnen besonders begeistert! Zum Glück durfte ich dort fotografieren und kann euch deshalb die tollen Kostüme zeigen:)
Zufällig sahen wir später noch eine Fotografie-Ausstellung auf der Straße nähe der Amerikanischen Botschaft.
